I think the original Last House on the Left was like that. I felt very helpless and sad after watching it. It is violent but also a very quiet film, there is a lot of time during the torture scene where the girls are just sitting there quietly crying, it’s very upsetting. The new film completely loses this feeling, I felt it was more about the violence.
Bast*rd Out Of Carolina was also very depressing, but be aware it is also very graphic and about child abuse.

Also check out the documentary Dear Zachary (it’s available to rent in most places as it’s an award winning film). If you are going to watch this one don’t read up on it first or it will lose impact. I had no idea what I was going into when I watched it, it’s just gut-wrenching.
